Precolonial Era and Colonial Era
The history of Enugu State traces back to the precolonial era when the land was inhabited by various indigenous ethnic groups, with the Igbo people forming the dominant population. These communities lived in organized societies, governed by traditional institutions and village councils. Notably, the Nsukka and Nri Kingdoms were influential in the region during this period. The Nri Kingdom held a significant place in Igbo history, considered the spiritual and cultural center of the Igbo people. Its religious and political influence extended to neighboring communities, shaping social norms and governance. The colonial era began with the arrival of British forces in the late 19th century. The British were particularly drawn to the region due to the discovery of coal in 1909. Coal mining operations started in 1915, transforming Enugu into a bustling mining town. The British established their administration in the area, constructing essential infrastructure such as railways to facilitate the extraction and transportation of coal.
One of the key initiatives in Enugu State is the simplification of business regulations. The state government has undertaken reforms to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and eliminate red tape that previously hindered business operations. These efforts include the consolidation of business registration processes, making it faster and easier for new companies to set up operations. Additionally, tax reforms have been implemented to create a more transparent and fair taxation system, encouraging businesses to operate within the legal framework without undue burden.
